Honesty is the best policy

I was flipping through Dad's students' assignments. Some of their works are good. As in really good. They were supposed to write a 15 pages essay on a quote of their choice, related to volunteerism. The medium of instruction is in Bahasa, but Dad encourages them to use English if they were to have any class presentation. So they were given the freedom to write the paper using the language they prefer, or feel more comfortable with.

Some papers were good. As in real good. And that surprised me. Not being sceptical or anything, but what's written in some of the essays were exceptionally flawless. I was like 'Dayumm! This student is really good'. But being a critical person (NOT), I noticed that (in this particular [unlucky] paper), the font colors in some paragraphs are not the same with the rest. Some parts are black (the automatic font color in MSWord) but some others are greyish black. Dan ada macam bintik2 (on the letters with the grey fonts) as compared to the black ones which are solid lah kan, without the tiny dots. Tak guna magnifying glass pun boleh nampak kot. -_-" So there you go. Apparently not everything in the paper is genuine.

Personally, it upsets me that uni students are very prone to 'copy and paste'. It's like they're taking the easy way to complete the assignments when other people are going through the hassle of doing it (honestly). I'd appreciate a genuine work,with acceptable grammatical errors rather than a 'flawless' paper (done with zero effort, of course!). If you don't feel comfortable writing in English you can resort to writing in Bahasa. And there's a writing technique called paraphrasing. Always, always paraphrase when you want to report someone else's works. And there's a proper way of citing or quoting information obtained from other people. And logically you need to have a page with the heading Reference at the end, right? Because in order to come up with a good piece of work, you'll have to do some readings. Unless if you're really smart to the extent that you can become a theorizer.

This is a serious problem I would say. And again, I'm upset. First is that they're not even doing it right. You want to cheat, please do it the right way. C'mon, takkan lah font color tak sama boleh tak perasan? Second, if they do not feel guilty about it, it'll create problem in the long run. Not being honest, get away with it and get good grades, and feeling good about it. Yes, that kind of problem. And what if they're the kind of person who hold on to the quote 'Buat jahat jangan sekali, buatlah berkali2'. Then what happens to keberkatan dalam menuntut ilmu? :( Kecewa.

Faint! x_x

I just love how the first season of Glee ended.
It was just perfect, with the two characters I love the most, singing together.

Today, the students presented their Dialogues.
One of the performances was about an audition for a singing competition.
A man clad in leather (tak pun sbnrnya..he he), accessorized with necklace and wristbands -- complete rock image, entered the audition room.
When asked to sing a song, he took his guitar, but ended up singing
*
*
*
Somewhere over the rainbow.

I didn't expect him to sing THAT song.
And he didn't ruin the song. Not even a bit.
*sheepish smile*

lol

To err is human.

And I'm only human.

I feel stupid. At the same time I learned that it's okay to laugh at yourself sometimes.

I'm teaching my poetry class today. They're going to discuss Resume. And I slipped my tongue. When I was supposed to say Dorothy Parker, I said Dorothy Perkins. -_-". Sigh. The girls laughed while the boys were trying to figure out what's so funny 'bout that.

One more paper and let's call it a semester! :)

I'm writing today because I'm starting to feel like I need to get some fresh air but it's raining outside so I had nowhere to go. The air is wet these days. I think a cup of hot chocolate will trigger my brain to give me even more inspiration. But that's like impossible here in this small room. Duh! But maybe I should consider having a mini-pantry here. That'd be fun, no? Think of having good friends to drink with and have a nice chat. Hmmm. Okay that's enough.

I'm just grateful that I'm almost done with the first semester! Hoyeahhh. It was weird at the beginning. But later everything seems to fall in place. (Thank you Allah, Alhamdulillah.) So I hope that next semester will be another great journey (mcm la 1st sem ni great habis!? Haha). I feel a lil bit nervous about finding the right topic for the thesis. Leceh la. I need more inspiration. I need to read more so that I can think more and I don't want to be trapped in this limited space in my brain. I will start to indulge in more readings this semester break. That's my promise.

Back to school

Quickies (bukan yang 8 tv punya)

I hate HATE my student ID number it's very difficult to remember.
I love TESL 5 (the students I'm tutoring) they're very nice and very nice. My vocab is limited, sorry.
I did my first M.Sc presentation it was great!
I missed undergrad life, I really do, I want to be the makcik kepoh I was back then and I also miss the other makcik kepohs.
I have a lot of assignments and most of them are journals/ articles I have no idea what to write about and the worst part is that I realize that procrastination is BAD but I procrastinate so that is the worst part. (Did I repeat the worst part twice? Okay I did)
I miss my friends I want to meet them but I always have something up during weekend and I'm not giving excuses, I promise it's not the "I'm busy,really-but- I can go out with my boyfriend pulak" excuse. I really am busy and I'm sorry for not being able to catch-up.

P.S: I need a break SOS

Hello, anyone there?

**Kris Allen - No boundaries

I'm sorry for the very long silence. So you've noticed that I don't write very often these days. Will you accept the lame 'I'm-too busy-as busy as a bee' excuse? Please do. Hehe. And I'm starting to feel like I don't know how to write anymore. (So this gonna be a very random 'just so u know-I'm still alive' update).

Life's treating me well. To a certain extent, I'm more than happy that the teaching practice has come to an end. The 3-friggin' months. I would say it was not that bad. And with the PERFECT ending, I couldn't feel any happier. So the undergrad life has ended and it's about time to move to a new chapter of formal education. I can't say another stage of life because that will lead to a whole different story if u know what I mean. Anyways, I'll pursue masters degree in UPM. And classes will start next week. I didn't have a lot of time deciding what to do, what programe should I take, what this and that. Yada yada yada. But life has to go on.

The GRF interview was very brief. (Sia2 saje ketakutan semalaman. Duh!). I've been offered to work with my former lecturer. Now I have to start reading the novels all over again. Lucky me, the summary and short notes are still there, so I hope those will prevent me from falling asleep after reading ONE page of those thick classic books. I hope I'll be able to finish all of them before the new semester starts. And start to plan what to teach. The challenge must be different, tutoring my very own juniors. But I hope I'll be fine.

I hope all of you are doing great, too!
Cheers! xoxo

P/s: Happy 54th birthday Ayah. You don't look 54. Not even close. Jeles!

Part 1

I'd say the first week in school was OK. Teaching itself is not that tiring. I have no class to teach on Thursday but that officially means that I'll have to relief classes AND we had to stay back after the school session ends to attend activities from meetings, to briefings, to co-curricular activities, to Usrahs on Fridays (:P). Well I hope we'll survive the other 11 weeks. And oh, I'm teaching From 4. Just to share bits of what happened this week.
  1. A class monitor decided to greet me "Assalamualaikum Sayang" when it was supposed to be CIKGU or TEACHER. But no worries his classmates didn't follow the lead.
  2. A student proposed me in class. He asked me to give back his ring another 5 years. (Oh! I politely rejected his proposal).
  3. My students have long names so I asked them to introduce themselves along with their nicknames. One boy said, "Nak panggil saya abang pn blh". (Eyewwww).
  4. My guru pembimbing is a preggy mommy. And she's a very COLD person. :(
  5. It's great that Ira and I are teaching only Form 4 and we get to do our lesson plans together. YAY! :)
  6. A teacher asked us to help her out for her daughter's assignment. We gotta do her public speaking speech. (Part time job)
  7. We're assigned to do the backdrop for Hari Anugerah Cemerlang.
Thats all for now. Will get back to all of yous next week.
Have fun people!

P/s: Sabtu pn kena pegi sekolah okkkay? :((

Finally.

Life's treating me well. This week would be our final week in UPM. Done with the lectures, assignments and soon the final exams. Teaching practice starts next month so I still have time to lepak around and do nothing. Okay, that's a big lie. Mama's salon is moving downstairs and there's so much to do until the renovation is complete. I've nothing much to say this time around. But perhaps this is just to let you know that I'm doing fine, maybe a little busy. I hope I can meet THE friends anytime soon (you guys are deeply missed).

THE verdict

Am going for teaching practice in Klang. Meru.

Sunday, August 10, 2008

Where should I go to?

Since Teaching Practice is just a heartbeat away (sigh), I need to make up my mind and decide the school, district, and state that I want to go to. Discussions with THE parents went no where; but it left me undecided and I wonder if you people who cares to read, will at least give me a way out.

We'll go through each state.

Selangor.
Pros;
- born and raised here. Familiar with most of the districts. So you can campak me wherever.
- mama: if you do your teaching practice here, you don't have to rent house, do your laundry and cook.
- ayah: i don't mind sending you to school everyday. (reasons not to give me a car, haha)
- won't have to think much if I run out of money. Mobile ATMs are around. :)

Cons;
- don't know who wants to do practicles here. Most ppl opt for Melaka.

Negeri Sembilan.
Pros;
- easy to go back home. If I apply for Seremban, can go back naik KTM. Ok lah tu! ;p

Cons;
- ?

Melaka.
Pros;
- A lot of people are going to Melaka.
- I can have a new 'air'. Haven't had the chance to stay for a long time in Melaka, except for school/ family trips
- ?

Cons;
- Life would be difficult without wheels.
- Would spend a lot on a lot of things.
-?

So whats the verdict? Maybe you can give me a little help here. I have all the reasons in the world to make my own decision, but I would have to admit that I'm indecisive. Do I really have to make an entry about this, ever? Go figure. People might say I'm exaggerating. But my freaking degree is determined by this freaking teaching practice. Darn.

Almost there.

The nearly-3 months-holidays is almost over. Duh! I think I've got a rotten brain now i.e. it's not possible for me to engage my brain with anything (academically, or intellectually, which ever you prefer). Talking about spending the holidays wisely, I think that there's only one time that I was able to be productive enough, in terms of getting to use my brain.

The teacher from a tuition center I went for an interview a long time ago (yes, I did) asked for my help to replace a teacher who cannot make it that day. I have some problems dealing with school kids (primary). I have the tendency to 'loose it', most of the times. Pardon me, I'm a human with many flaws. Ya, lame excuse you'd say. He he.

SO, I taught them English Language. It's more like tutoring because the class is very small. Two standards (2 and 4) combined as one, with only 4 students. I can remember my students names; Alvin, Irene, Ezetty and Ivy. They were students of different proficiencies. But since that was my first experience to teach 'real students' (finally), felt that it was indeed a valuable one. Some of the students were my sister's ex-students, so I was being a bit cautious of my ways in handling them, (talk about being afraid of being compared to her). *laughs*

And that was my first teaching experience. The 'other' time would be during the Teaching Practise some time in 2009. Maybe these will be the only times I'll be teaching school kids, unless I change my mind and decide to be a school teacher (but I think that is almost impossible. Period.) Anyhow, I'm glad that I survived the day. :-) It was not easy, really. Alvin was more enthusiast about folding papers to make a jet rather than writing answers to my questions. He ended up flying his jet for the last 15 minutes before the class ended. Mischievous boy.

P/s: It's been quite a busy week. My younger sister will be doing her degree in Law, heartiest congratulations (Gor2, your orientation starts this Sunday! *giggles*). I know that she'll be doing fine. Good luck!

Inspiring, Inspired.

So, I consider myself among the luckiest person to get to attend a program called Berilmu Berbakti. The 3 days-2 nights program was indeed hectic, yet I was glad that it started and ended well as planned. This is not the first time that I attend a camp which involves the orphans. The first thing to bear in mind is that, Rumah Anak-anak Yatim or the Orphanage is NOT only for those who've lost a parent or both, but some of them have the history of broken family, divorced parents, and some with stories you can never expect. C'est La Vie. All these somehow or rather were eye openers and I am thankful for what I have and who I am today. When everything seems too much for me to handle, I always question, why ME? But then, when I heard stories from those kids (they're all 11 to 17 years old) I was impressed. They managed to survive regardless of the countless problem they're facing. During one slot called 'sharing', I was touched when they shared their stories. A boy aged 15, admitted that he tried all sorts of 'bad stuffs, be it ganja, gam, or rokok. There's nothing we can actually do about it. - 3 days is not possible for you to change a person as a whole-. Some of them shared stories about their 'Rumah'. To our shock, some of the officers at the orphanage were the kind of people who are not sincere in taking care of them. A boy tells that their pengetua always say bad things to them, (yes, he admitted that they are not good-and-nice kids) but I personally feel that it is not a good thing. They need proper care and people around them should show their concern, and not to call them anak haram! Those kids, their self-esteem is very low. Most of them said that they will definitely work after they finish high school. They have no motivation, they have no reason to move on, they cannot picture themselves in 10 years time, which proves that they have no vision.

We tried our best to encourage them, and guide them to a different goal in life. All we can do now is just to hope that they'll be successful individuals in the future. Anyway, I haven't got any pictures of the camp since I forgot to bring my camera. I'll try to get the pictures from my friends and will get it posted here. :)
